Ednodio Quintero’s Photography

Ednodio Quintero is a Venezuelan writer, photographer and japanologist. Sometimes his pictures appear along with short texts, and this seems to be the only influence the writer has on the photographer. Quintero’s preference for the female portrait genre is revealed in the series “Bellezas del lejano oeste” (“Beauties of the Far West”). His subjects are beauty and almost always Venezuelan women. Beauty is a classical requirement of the genre, and Venezuelan women are famously known in international beauty contests, but “Beauties of the Far West” is not a gallery of ideal types. The word “beauties” rather suggests both a subsidiary critique of an aesthetic prerequisite and an unending exploration of a Venezuelan myth.

It is not clear whether a similar intention guided Quintero’s portraits of Japanese women. In “Cien bellezas de Edo” (”One Hundred Beauties from Edo”), he experiments with places in Tokio, candid gestures, light and shadows, and advanced photographic techniques like Bokeh. The label “street photography” could be used here, as long as we remember, first, the emphasis is on the portrait of women and, second, these pictures express admiration and sympathy as though Quintero were photographing friends and not strangers.
